We’ve lived so long under the spell of hierarchy—from god-kings to feudal lords to party bosses—that only recently have we awakened to see not only that “regular” citizens have the capacity for self-governance, but that without their engagement our huge global crises cannot be addressed. The changes needed for human society simply to survive, let alone thrive, are so profound that the only way we will move toward them is if we ourselves, regular citizens, feel meaningful ownership of solutions through direct engagement. Our problems are too big, interrelated, and pervasive to yield to directives from on high.

Organic Agriculture, Capitalism And The Parallel Reality Of The Pro-GMO Evangelist

The case for GM cannot be made in terms of better yields, less chemical inputs, safety, impact on the environment, nutritional value or improved farmers’ incomes, so the tactic is to denigrate alternative solutions.
This Britisher cites a vast majority of scientists whose research overwhelmingly supports organic agriculture as the most productive method of farming. Yet, as in similar cases with Big Tobacco and more recently by energy corporations with the issue of climate destabilization (read Merchants of Doubt by Oreskes and Conway regarding both industries), the voices of scientists our drowned out by well-funded corporate campaigns to discredit scientists.

He concludes with this insightful comment:
...the real issue isn't about whether or not organic can feed the world, it is that global capitalism is preventing us from doing so and will continue to do so if its structures and impacts remain unchallenged.
